SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Cooper Haberern and
Steven Ressler led the way for the River Hawks with 19 and 14 points, respectively, in Saturday's 72-62 Landmark Conference win over the Scranton to advance to 15-8 (12-4 Landmark) on the season and maintain second place in the Landmark Conference standings.
The team's lone senior
Noah Klinewski was in a class all his own being honored prior to tip-off as part of Senior Day Saturday. With that to get Susquehanna's energy off the ground, they answered Scranton's opening three with a layup from Haberern on their first possession with layup from Haberern after two offensive rebounds, one by
Brandon Lavitt and the other by
Michael Pirone. Both teams would go back and forth with scoring until the River Hawks were able to turn an 18-23 deficit into a 16-point swing to lead 34-23 at halftime. The River Hawks shot 43.8 percent (14-32) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-17) from behind the arc, while grabbing 23 rebounds. The River Hawks would have 13 assists off the 14 shots they made in the opening 20. Haberern had 11 of his 19 points in the first half to be the first scorer in double digits.
In the second half the River Hawks would not abdicate the lead to the Royals. Susquehanna had success on offense that they had in the first half, shooting 45.5 percent (10-22) from the floor and 41.7 percent (5-12) from deep. The biggest lead of the game came with 1:53 left in the contest after a three ball from Haberern pushed SU up by 16. The redshirt sophomore Ressler would lead SU in scoring for the second half with 14 points, shooting 4-for-5 for the half including 2-of-3 from 3-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 touch at the line.
Billy Anderson would add five more points in the second half towards his game total of 13 points and eight rebounds, while
Marcus Mitchell tacked on three for a 10-point, five-rebouds afternoon as the River Hawks boasted four double-digit scorers. Anderson and Mitchell would lead the team in rebounds for the second half, cleaning the glass four times each. Haberern would add two more boards to his six in the first half to match Anderson for the game lead in rebounds.
Susquehanna's successful Senior Day Saturday was a vital one to rebound from consecutive defeats to Wilkes and Lycoming this past week. The River Hawks hold down second place in the Landmark Conference standings, two games behind first-place Catholic and one game ahead of third-place Drew. The Cardinals and Rangers faced off Saturday in D.C., with Drew taking a commanding 96-81 win to keep within one game of Susquehanna for the second and final first-round bye spot for the league tournament. The two are scheduled to face off in the regular season finale next Saturday in New Jersey, but not before the River Hawks play host to Juniata this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
