SELINSGROVE, PA (February 20, 2024) – Hosting their first ever home Landmark Conference playoff game, Susquehanna women's basketball showed no signs of butterflies on Tuesday evening, proving their might as the fourth seed by throttling fifth-seeded Drew University 75-52. Four River Hawks reached double digit points as the team shot 44.3 percent from the field and a lofty 58.3 percent from beyond the arc.
SU was on fire to start the game, jumping out to an 8-1 advantage in the first three minutes. They would shoot a heady 61.5 percent from the floor in the quarter, while going three for four from deep and hitting a pair of free throws. Julia Pinckert was instrumental in that early charge, hitting two of those three pointers as part of her 12-point night. The Rangers fought to get back within a point at 13-12 with 3:59 to go, but then went scoreless for the remainder of the quarter as Susquehanna scored eight unanswered and never looked back.
Susquehanna pushed their lead into double figures in the second quarter and it would never dip back below 11 for the remainder of the contest. They led by 19 points at the halftime break and pushed out to a whopping 27-point advantage midway through the third quarter.
Julia Roth led all scorers with 13 points, filling up the stat sheet with an additional six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Carly George recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while first-year Sydney Weyant tallied a career-high 10 points to be the fourth player in double digits. Her two made threes off the bench contributed to SU's impressive seven of twelve performance from beyond the arc. They also shot well from the foul line, hitting 14 of their 18 attempts, just another shooting advantage as Drew shot just 45.8 percent from the charity stripe, indicative of their offensive woes as they shot 31.3 percent from the floor and went just one for 12 from deep.
The River Hawks will now get the chance to try and play spoiler in the semifinal round, as they'll travel to face #1 seed Catholic on Thursday evening in Washington, DC. The Cardinals went 17-1 in conference play and ended the regular season ranked #10 in the Top 25 poll, presenting a stiff test for SU as they seek their first ever appearance in the Landmark Conference Championship game. The game in DC will tip off at 7:30 pm.
