SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna University women's lacrosse made their season debut Wednesday night with a non-conference date versus Dickinson. Though the Red Devils opened a five-goal lead towards a 9-7 victory, the River Hawks celebrated a career accomplishment in senior
Kelsey Homberg earning her 200th career draw control with her third of four pickups on the evening.
Dickinson's first three goals all came on free positions. After an opening Red Devils goal Susquehanna answered swiftly with scores from
Emma Kelleher and
Kim Nagengast, assisted by Homberg and
Liv Owen, respectively, to lead 2-1 after one. It proved to be their only lead of the contest as Dickinson scored four straight to open the second quarter, with Susquehanna's only response coming from
Heather Riefenhauser from Owen for the halftime score to read 5-3. Prior to half's end, Homberg made the career draw control to give Susquehanna a boost entering intermission.
Only two scores came in the third quarter, both coming from Dickinson for a 7-3 lead entering the fourth. While Kelleher got one back to start the fourth for her second score of the day, the Red Devils got two more for their largest lead of the game. Susquehanna retaliated with three scores in the final three minutes to keep Dickinson on its toes, coming from Kelleher for her third of the day on a one-up chance from Owen with 2:57 left, followed by McNamara from Homberg with 1:25 to go, and Homberg from
Allie Kutler in the last 30 seconds.
Sophomore
Aerin O'Brien took her rightful place as Susquehanna's leading woman in goal, gathering 13 saves on the day. Owen, Homberg, and Kelleher logged three-point days, all in different ways with Kelleher's hat trick, Homberg on one goal and two assists, and Owen assisting all three of hers. Nagengast, Riefenhauser, and McNamara each had a goal, with Kutler having one assist.
Dickinson led in shots, 34-18, including 22-13 in shots on goal. Both sides proved effective on the clearing side of things, with the Red Devils holding down 16-of-20 and the River Hawks 21-of-24. The one disparity was the free positions, in which Dickinson tallied four goals off 11 opportunities compared to Susquehanna's 1-of-5. The Red Devils held a 12-6 edge in draw controls.
The women head out on the road this Saturday for a matchup at Misericordia before returning for four straight home matches: St. Mary's (Md.) – Feb. 27, McDaniel – Mar. 2, Alvernia – Mar. 4, and Rowan – Mar. 9.
