WASHINGTON, DC (February 24, 2024) – The Susquehanna men's basketball team fought well on Saturday afternoon, competing in their third Landmark Championship game in five seasons. Entering the day as the third seed, they faced off against first-seeded Catholic, who also entered the day ranked #18 in the national top 25 poll. The River Hawks are one of only three teams to have beaten the Cardinals this season, but were unable to replicate that result, falling 87-65 to the hosts. All five Catholic starters would reach double digit points on the day.
A hot start for Catholic put SU on the back foot as the River Hawks scored the first two points but saw Catholic run off 12 unanswered in response. Susquehanna would manage to get back as close as five points on a made three by Jackson Van Wagener, who made two on the day and scored a career-high 15 points, but Catholic continued to press their advantage on the offensive end, pushing back into double digits and taking a 40-27 lead into the halftime break.
The River Hawks fought back to start the second half, cutting the deficit to nine with 17:30 to go on a pair of Marcus Mitchell free throws, but Catholic would score seven unanswered in response. From there, the Cardinals remained firmly in command, scoring at a high rate to keep Susquehanna at arm's length. Mitchell finished the day as the River Hawks' leading scorer with 19 points, also adding a pair of rebounds and three steals.
Susquehanna shot 40 percent from the floor and went 16 of 22 from the foul line. The River Hawks finish the season 17-11 overall and will return nearly all of this season's roster next year, having just one graduating senior.
