MYRTLE BEACH, SC (March 10, 2024) – The Susquehanna baseball team got back in the win column on Sunday night as they faced off against New England College in their second game in Myrtle Beach. After going back and forth with the Pilgrims in the early innings, the River Hawks leveraged a five-run frame in the bottom of the 6th into a comfortable 9-4 victory.
After taking an early lead in the bottom of the 1st inning on a bases-loaded fielder's choice, Susquehanna would see New England tie things up on a sacrifice fly in the 3rd. Joe Healy hit one of his own in the 5th, bringing Sean McCulloch home for one of his four runs scored on the day. After the Pilgrims once again scratched a matching run across in the top of the 6th, SU blew the doors open in the bottom of the inning, putting up a five spot thanks to two hits, a fielding error, and plenty of patience at the plate as they worked three walks, also getting help from three wild pitches and two stolen bases.
Patience at the plate was a common theme for SU, as they drew ten walks in the game, led by Tony Rossi who drew three free passes. They pushed their lead to six runs in the bottom of the 7th after Dylan Heyduk ripped a two-out double and then came all the way from second to home on a wild pitch. New England responded with a pair of runs in the top of the 8th, but Susquehanna slammed the door and scored another run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 9-4, seeing McCulloch score his fourth run after Thomas Romanelli drew a bases-loaded walk. Romanelli tied for the team lead in RBIs with two, joined by Michael Biuso, who went 3 for 4 at the plate, scored a run, drew a walk, and stole two bases. McCulloch also went 2 for 3, drew a pair of walks, and stole two bases.
Anthony Colucci picked up his first win of the season after pitching 5.0 innings while allowing just one earned run on five hits and striking out two batters. Adam Stuck would enter in the 7th and toss a three-inning save, allowing just two hits.
SU will get right back to work tomorrow, facing off against Mt. Aloysius College at noon for their third game of their Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach.
