FREDERICKSBURG, VA (March 16, 2024) - The Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team had their six-game winning streak snapped with a 10-4 loss to the University of Mary Washington Saturday afternoon.
This game was a defensive struggle and early on the River Hawk offense came out flat, falling behind 2-0 after the first period. Susquehanna was outshot 13-4 in the period, but six saves from goaltender Jozef Korpics kept them in the game.
The Eagles scored their third goal in the first two minutes of the second period, but Kieran Thomas finally got Susquehanna on the board with an unassisted goal with 10:04 to play in the half. However, the River Hawks couldn't build any momentum off it and Mary Washington added another two goals to give them a 5-1 lead at halftime.
The third period started off well for the River Hawks as JP Jones scored to cut the deficit to 5-2 off an assist from Jack Gaillard at the 9:56 mark, but Mary Washington undid the damage just 52 seconds later to get the lead back up to four. The Eagles scored three more goals in the period while Susquehanna's offense was kept quiet as they once again were outshot 13-4 in the period and trailed 9-2 going into the fourth.
A quick goal by the Eagles to start the fourth put them up 10-2, the first time all season the River Hawks allowed 10 or more goals in a game. Matthew Faggioli and Connor Aitken each scored a goal in the final eight minutes to bring it to the final score of 10-4.
The main reason for the defeat was the massive difference in shots between the two teams. Susquehanna managed 25 shots the whole game compared to Mary Washington's 45 shots. They also committed 21 turnovers on the afternoon and failed to capitalize on man-up opportunities going 1-11 on those chances.
The loss drops Susquehanna to 6-2 on the season and they'll be off for a week as they return to Sassafras Field on March 23 for their first Landmark Conference game this season against the Drew University Rangers. The game will start at 1:00 p.m.
