SU Baseball Gets First Landmark Series Win of 2024

SCRANTON, PA (March 17, 2024) – After splitting their first two games against Lycoming yesterday, Susquehanna baseball finished out their first conference series of the season with a win, unleashing an offensive onslaught enroute to a 12-7 victory over the Warriors on Sunday afternoon.

Led by six different players with multi-hit games at the plate, the River Hawks jumped into the lead in the top of the 3rd inning on a three-RBI double by Michael Mancuso, tacking on another run as Mancuso scored on an RBI single by Sean McCulloch to make the score 4-1. One of two doubles for the senior on the day, Mancuso was a critical part of the offense for SU, racking up five RBIs to lead the team, accounting for nearly half of the team's runs.

Jack Cahill also had a monster day at the plate, hitting a pair of home runs while going 3 for 5 and scoring three runs and tallying three RBIs. He would tie with Joe Healy for the team lead in hits and runs scored, while Cahill also stole a base, one of three steals for SU on the day.

McCulloch, Tony Rossi, and Dylan Heyduk joined with Mancuso, Cahill, and Healy as the six with multi-hit games, helping the team tally 16 hits and stretch out to their biggest lead of nine runs in the top of the 9th. Lycoming produced some late offense as they picked up four runs in the bottom of the inning, but the gap was still too large to overcome as the game ended with Susquehanna still five runs in front. The Warriors managed 12 hits as a team but were also haunted by five fielding errors that helped pile on with the River Hawks' bevy of hits.

Senior Aidan Martin got his first win of the campaign with a strong performance, navigating through Lycoming's offense for 7.0 innings of work, allowing just two runs on ten hits and striking out a pair of batters. He and relievers Adam Stuck and Brian Shane would also see the benefit of some strong defense behind them, as the River Hawks turned four double plays to help stymie the Warriors' scoring efforts.

After plenty of travel to start the season, Susquehanna will finally get to take to their home field this week, with four-straight games at home. They'll face Keystone College on Wednesday, March 20 at 3:30 pm for their home opener in a non-conference matchup, before welcoming Catholic University to Selinsgrove for a crucial Landmark series. They'll play the Cardinals twice on Saturday at noon and 3 pm, before wrapping up the three-game series on Sunday at noon.
