WINCHESTER, VA (March 2, 2024) – Susquehanna baseball fell in their first of two games against #4 Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon, seeing the vaunted offense of the Hornets jump out to an early advantage and continue to register runs throughout the game, yielding an 11-2 final score in favor of the hosts.
Hits were hard to come by for SU against the Shenandoah starter, with just five total on the day. Michael Biuso provided two of them, able to produce positive outcomes in most of his plate appearances as he added a walk to his 2 for 3 day at the plate. Thomas Romanelli would pick up the only RBI for Susquehanna, scoring Biuso on a single to left center in the top of the 4th inning. This made the score 4-1, but Shenandoah responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning.
After a difficult start for Aidan Martin, Brice Gregory, Anthony Colucci, and Evan Applegate would do well to limit the Hornets over the next few innings, keeping them off the board for the next three innings while allowing just two hits. However, offense continued to be hard to come by for the River Hawks. After going three up, three down in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, they would scratch another run across the plate in the 8th inning, putting together back-to-back singles, a groundout to advance the runners, and a wild pitch on a walk to allow a runner to come home. However, SU would still see two runners left on base and the score at 7-2 in Shenandoah's favor. The Hornets added some insurance back in the bottom of the inning with four runs on two hits, three walks, and a pair of runs scoring on wild pitches.
Susquehanna would load the bases in the top of the 9th, but were unable to score any of those runners, not quite mustering a potential comeback effort.
The River Hawks will get another crack at the hosting Hornets tomorrow, taking the field once again at noon to conclude their weekend trip to Virginia.
