SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna baseball put Catholic to the sword in their first Landmark Conference home game of the season, beating the Cardinals in a run-rule-shortened 11-1 decision.
Ryan Redmond got the start in game 1 of the three-game set, picking up the win and throwing 6.2 innings while striking out four and allowing five hits.
Adam Stuck came in and relieved him, retiring the only batter he faced.
The River Hawks got their offensive contributions from up and down the lineup, with seven different players recording hits. They were led by
Tony Rossi and
Sean McCulloch, who each went 4-for-5 at the dish.
McCulloch also scored three runs while Rossi set a career high with six runs batted in. McCulloch added a stolen base while Rossi contributed with two, while extending his hit streak to 10 games and his RBI streak to nine.
The River Hawks got on the board early after a scoreless top of the first from Redmond, with McCulloch crossing the plate after
Tyler Hmielewski's ground ball forced an error from the Catholic shortstop.
They added four runs in the second, scoring two when Rossi lined a single into center field, scoring McCulloch and
Christian Biuso, who launched a one-out double off the wall in left center. Hmielewski was on the scene again his second time up, singling to right to score Rossi and
Jack Cahill, who had been intentionally walked after Rossi stole second.
The River Hawks went down 1-2-3 in the third, but were back at it in the fourth when
Michael Biuso started the inning off with a base hit and Rossi got all of a pitch from Catholic starter Danny Fitzgerald, taking it over the wall in left. Rossi nearly left the yard again in the sixth, but had to settle for a double, his conference-best eighth of the year.
The seventh inning was the final frame, with
Michael Mancuso lining a single into left before
Sam Martucci walked and
Christian Biuso reached on a fielder's choice. McCulloch singled and brought home Mancuso, then
Michael Biuso singled home Martucci and Rossi ended the game by singling to center to plate
Christian Biuso and McCulloch.
The win puts the River Hawks at 7-10 on the season, and they improve to 3-1 in the Landmark Conference. The win represents the first regular season victory over Catholic since 2019, while they will look to continue after the strong start to the weekend series, taking on the Cardinals again in a Sunday doubleheader with games beginning at 12 and 3 p.m.
