SELINSGROVE, PA (March 27, 2024) – Susquehanna softball got to take to their home field for the first time in 2024, hosting Penn State Altoona for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. Getting back into the win column and winning two in a row for the first time this season, the River Hawks swept the visiting Lions, claiming a 6-1 win in game one before coming out on top in game two 2-1.
Game 1: Susquehanna 6, Penn State Altoona 1
The first game of the afternoon was all about getting the offense clicking for the River Hawks, as they were able to string together some hits after only tallying two combined runs over the weekend at Catholic. Zoe Bork got things going straight away in the bottom of the 1st as SU jumped out to a 2-0 advantage on a two-RBI double by the senior. Bork continued to come up clutch at the plate as she struck for two more RBI in the bottom of the 3rd, this time hitting a triple to make the score 4-1 and match her career-high of 4 RBIs in a game.
The runs continued to stack up for Susquehanna in the bottom of the 3rd as Bork came home to score on a fielding error and Kelsey Burrows followed that with an RBI single to right field, producing the final score of 6-1.
Hannah Foust and Amanda Amerman would combine for a strong performance in the circle, allowing the Lions just five total hits while the sole run was unearned, and the two sophomores teamed up to strike out six batters. Amerman earned her second win of the season.
Game 2: Susquehanna 2, Penn State Altoona 1
In contrast to the first contest, the second game proved to be a pitcher's duel. While both teams managed six hits each, the scoring was much more muted. The River Hawks got a hit each in the first two innings but would not score a run until the bottom of the 3rd, as a lead-off single by Hailey Kaba eventually yielded the first run of the game on an RBI single from Lexi Palumbo. Palumbo would end up providing all of SU's scoring, as she came up with the team's second run in the bottom of the 5th, launching a two-out solo shot over the left field fence for her first home run of the season.
Brianna Jones was dominant in the circle, holding the Lions scoreless for six innings as she racked up seven total strikeouts. She picked up her fifth win of the season, coming up just shy of the complete game shutout as the Lions mounted a late two-out rally in the top of the 7th, scoring their only run on an RBI triple. But Jones shut down the attempted comeback to seal the win.
SU will get back to Landmark Conference play this weekend, hosting their first conference doubleheader of the season on Saturday. Elizabethtown will come to Selinsgrove for games at 1 and 3 pm as the River Hawks look to get their first Landmark wins of 2024.
