BETHLEHEM, PA – Friday belonged to the Susquehanna men's lacrosse team in a decisive road contest at Moravian, 13-3. Junior attacker
Brennan Lorence, needing just one more goal to break the school career goals record, wasted no time just over one minute in for the opening score. It was the first of a game-high three goals for Lorence, who now has 126 goals in his budding three-year career.
Lorence, in fact, scored the first two goals of the day, the first coming at 13:56 left in the first and the next at 7:06, as the River Hawks rushed out to a 5-0 lead. Moravian got the last goal of the first quarter and the first of the second to cut the score to 5-2, but one other goal was all Susquehanna allowed as they replied with five straight more for a 10-2 lead near the end of the third quarter. After Moravian's remaining goal made it 10-3 to end the third, Susquehanna closed things out with three unanswered from
Nick Remund, the first career goal for
Garrett Howell, and Lorence's third of the day.
The River Hawks pounced on 1-of-2 extra man opportunities, while Moravian was shut out on its lone opportunity. Faceoff man
Jared Tavernite won 12 of SU's 16 battles in the circle, with the other two going to
Garrett Laub in as many tries, while Moravian won just four.
Jozef Korpics offered up 12 saves on the day in 57-and-a-half minutes of action to pick up the win, while
Augie Granatelli had one save in the final two-and-a-half minutes.
Steven Musser and
Rob McCullough finished with two goals, while
Connor Aitken and
Kieran Thomas each had two points on one goal and one assist.
Matthew Faggioli and
Kieran Koenke both had one assist.
Lorence surpassed Scott Hodgson's career goal mark, which he set in the early years of Susquehanna men's lacrosse between 2001-04. The junior's three-goal day puts him at 30 on the year, almost at the halfway point of his school and Landmark record-setting 61 goals from last season. He is now second all-time with 163 career points, behind only Austin Lein's 182 points (96 goals, 86 assists) set between 2011-14.
The River Hawks have next up Catholic University on the road Wednesday, April 3 with a 4 p.m. opening faceoff time.
