SELINSGROVE, PA – The Susquehanna University quickly erased an early 4-1 deficit with 11 straight goals, including an 8-0 ledger in the second quarter, on Monday night to claim a 16-9 home win over Alvernia. The victory, their second in the last three days following their home win Saturday against McDaniel, bumps the River Hawks to 3-2, offering them a couple of days to prepare for their next matchup against a formidable Rowan team this Saturday at home at 1 p.m.
The mood early on appeared to be trending to Susquehanna as they drew first blood with a
Caitlin Harvey score three-and-a-half minutes in, her third of the season. But before they could settle in Alvernia surprised the River Hawks with stifling defense and then on the other end firing off four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead late in the first quarter. Just seconds after the Golden Wolves' fourth goal, the River Hawks kickstarted their motor when
Jessica Russo picked up her second career goal to cut the lead to two at quarter's end. It was all River Hawks in the second quarter with eight unanswered goals, courtesy of three from
Hannah McNamara, two from
Heather Riefenhauser, and one each from
Liv Owen,
Kelsey Homberg, and
Allie Kutler.
Goalie
Aerin O'Brien allowed just one goal over the second and third quarters in a ten-save day as Susquehanna continued to build on to its lead.
Abby Andrus netted two more in the third quarter for the first of her game-high four goals on the night, along with the first of
Emma Kelleher's two goals on the evening to lead 13-5 entering the fourth. Kelleher and Andrus joined forces for SU's first three goals, one from Kelleher and two from Andrus, to set into motion a running clock with just over eight minutes remaining. While Alvernia was able to stop the running clock with three goals to close out the evening, it was a small victory if that.
Riefenhauser led the night with five points on two goals and three assists, putting her at 138 points for her career on 81 goals and 57 assists. McNamara had a hat trick to join Andrus in the three-or-more goal category, putting her at 84 points on 65 goals and 19 assists. Homberg had one goal and five ground balls, putting her over 100 ground balls for her career with 104.
Saturday's home matchup with Rowan marks a poignant matchup against a Profs squad that received votes in the IWLCA national poll. It also will mark the end of a front-loaded home slate for the River Hawks, playing five of their first six games at home. This will balance out with three straight on the road starting next week with games against Marymount, Lebanon Valley, and Drew that will open their Landmark season.
