Softball Ups Win Streak to Five

OWINGS MILLS, MD (April 16, 2024) – Taking a break from Landmark matchups, Susquehanna softball traveled to face Stevenson for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Continuing their fine form, SU ran their win streak up to five straight with a sweep of the Mustangs, winning the opener 3-1 and then taking game two 4-2.

Game 1: Susquehanna 3, Stevenson 1

After three scoreless innings to start the game, the hosts managed to get on the board first with an RBI triple in the bottom of the 4th, tallying their only run of the game against an outstanding start by Brianna Jones. She would throw her 13th complete game of the season, allowing just six hits and no earned runs, striking out five batters and not walking a single batter.

The River Hawks managed to get a run across with two outs in the top of the 6th, with Stevie Shaak coming home to score from third on a grounder before a tag out between second and third ended the inning. With the game remaining tied through the 7th, the teams headed to extra innings. The River Hawks immediately put the pressure on, bunting the lead runner from second to third before Lexi Palumbo came through with a two-out RBI double to give SU their first lead of the day. Zoe Bork then doubled the lead in the next at-bat with an RBI single to center field, setting the score at 3-1. Jones then set Stevenson down in order in the bottom of the 8th to seal the result and her ninth win of the season.

Game 2: Susquehanna 4, Stevenson 2

Stevenson once again struck first in game two, scoring on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 1st. But SU struck back with three-straight singles in the top of the 2nd to load the bases before seeing a run score on an RBI fielder's choice by Katelyn Dugery.

The Mustangs once again took the lead in the bottom of the 5th, but Susquehanna responded to the pressure in the top of the 6th with another RBI fielder's choice, this off the bat of Nicole Plesh. Not wanting to leave it to extra innings again, the River Hawks claimed their first lead of game two in the top of the 7th, starting with Hailey Kaba reaching base on an error before immediately coming home to score on a double by Hannah Roland. Emily Deitch then plated Roland with an RBI single.

Hannah Foust and Amanda Amerman combined for SU in the circle, with Amerman getting her fourth win of the year. The sophomore pair combined for four strikeouts while also not allowing any walks.

Now 13-15 overall, SU will have a chance to get to .500 and improve their position in the Landmark with a weekend doubleheader at Drew. The teams will play on Saturday, April 20 at 1 and 3 pm.
