Martin Reaches 100 K's as Baseball Splits Saturday with Drew

SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna baseball split the Saturday doubleheader of a three-game weekend set with Drew, winning 5-3 in the nightcap as Aidan Martin picked up his 100th career strikeout and the win in the game.

Game 1: Drew 12, Susquehanna 6

Despite putting up 12 hits in the first game of the doubleheader, four of which went for extra bases, the River Hawks were beaten 12-6 by Drew, who got a strong seven-inning start and 13 total hits en route to the win.

A first-inning double saw Drew put the first run on the board, while four runs came across, all unearned for pitcher Ryan Redmond as the Rangers rallied with two outs.

The River Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring on a first-and-third play where Sean McCulloch stole second, then the ball escaped the shortstop for an error that plated Michael Mancuso.

Drew added runs in the fourth and sixth, while the River Hawks clawed a run back to make the game 7-2 after seven frames when Tony Rossi brought home Griffin Shenman on a sacrifice fly. The Rangers would put together another rally in the eighth, pushing across five runs off Jack Greco and Adam Stuck.

The River Hawks showed fight, scoring two in the eighth inning on an RBI triple off the bat of Tyler Hmielewski, who was brought home by Shenman's sacrifice fly. Jason Stine twirled a scoreless ninth that included a double play, but the River Hawks couldn't manage any more than another two RBIs for Hmielewski on a base hit to center field.

Redmond took the loss, going 5+ innings while allowing three earned.

Game 2: Susquehanna 5, Drew 3

The River Hawks rebounded from the defeat in game one by posting nine hits and nine walks to the tune of five runs, as Tyler Hargus, making his first start of the season, worked four walks in the win.

Tyler Rigot returned to the mound for the hosts, striking out four in 3+ innings while allowing three runs on just one hit. Drew took the lead twice, scoring first in the third inning on a wild pitch.

In between the Rangers' two leads, the River Hawks took a lead of their own in the bottom of the third when Dylan Heyduk singled to center and brought in a pair, Michael Biuso and McCulloch scoring on the base hit.

Aidan Martin came to relieve Rigot and shut the door on the Drew bats over six innings of work, throwing just 60 pitches while punching out seven, including reaching 100 strikeouts with an inning-ending strikeout in the eighth.

The River Hawks took the lead on a two-run hit by Michael Biuso after the first three batters of the inning reached safely. The home side tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on a sac fly off the bat of Shenman following some aggressive baserunning by the right fielder Hmielewski.

Martin picked up the win in relief, bringing him tied for the team lead in wins with four after leading the team in that category a year ago with seven.

The River Hawks complete the series with Drew on Sunday, before taking on Penn State Harrisburg and Juniata on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. They wrap up their conference slate with Senior Day next weekend with a three-game set against Wilkes.
