SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna baseball completed a doubleheader sweep over Wilkes on Saturday, taking the series and clinching a postseason berth in the process.
Game 1: Susquehanna 4, Wilkes 3
Susquehanna got seven strong innings from
Ryan Redmond, who allowed just four hits and three runs, only one of which was earned. A pair of two-run frames, the sixth and the eighth, propelled the River Hawks to the win.
Wilkes jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the second inning on an RBI single then adding a second run in the third by way of a sacrifice fly. Both runs came across unearned for Redmond.
The River Hawks picked up four hits from the first five innings, but were unable to cross the plate until the sixth, when
Tyler Hmielewski's bases-loaded single brought home
Jack Cahill. The next batter,
Griffin Shenman, drew a walk, scoring
Dylan Heyduk. The inning would end abruptly, however, as facing a new pitcher,
Michael Mancuso's line drive was caught by the shortstop, who doubled off Hmielewski at second.
Wilkes added a third run in the seventh on a double steal, and Redmond's day ended after a career-high seven innings pitched. He was relieved by
Brice Gregory, who tossed a scoreless eighth and picked up the win, his second of the year.
Cahill reached base to start the eighth by getting hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a
Joe Healy base on balls, and came around to score from second on another Hmielewski RBI single, the junior adding a team-best second RBI of the day while tying for the team lead with a pair of hits. Shenman was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Mancuso drove in another run with a walk to give the home side the lead.
That set the table for
Vincent Mariella to pick up his third save of the season, setting the Colonels down in order to collect the save in a one-run ballgame.
Game 2: Susquehanna 7, Wilkes 3
It was the home side that struck first in the nightcap, courtesy of a
Michael Biuso double in the bottom half of the third that scored Mancuso and
Sean McCulloch.
They gave starter
Tyler Rigot a 6-0 lead after four innings, adding four runs on a two-run double down the left field line as part of his 2-for-2 game. McCulloch got on after him with a walk, and when Mancuso advanced to third while Shenman scored on a Biuso sac fly, it set the table to for McCulloch to become the first player in the history of the Landmark Conference to reach triple digits in stolen bases as he swiped second.
Tony Rossi was intentionally walked to load the bases, then Mancuso scored on a wild pitch to cap a four-run inning.
Rigot lasted 4.1 innings en route to the win, striking out seven while allowing just a solitary hit as the Colonels were held to just seven hits across the two games.
Kieran Dougherty relieved him and induced two outs to end the inning.
Mancuso contributed a third RBI of the game in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly that scored designated hitter
Kris Morrow, who reached base on a single up the middle.
Wilkes added two runs on a sixth-inning single off
Aidan Martin, with the runs coming on the line of
Jack Greco. Martin retired the side without any further damage, but surrendered an unearned run in the seventh.
Martin slammed the door the rest of the way, retiring the side in order in the ninth as he picked up his first save of the season. Rigot's win was his second of the year.
The River Hawks have clinched a postseason spot, but they are still jockeying for position as they wrap up their conference play with the third and final game of the series against Wilkes on Sunday, when they will celebrate Senior Day. They complete their regular season schedule at York (PA) on Tuesday, April 30.
