SELINSGROVE, PA - The Susquehanna baseball team picked up a valuable conference win over Moravian on Saturday afternoon, winning 7-5 after a strong six innings from
Aidan Martin. Martin allowed just two earned runs while striking out three as he picked up his third win of the season.
The River Hawks found themselves behind after the top of the first, but they were not affected by it as they came strong out of the gate, posting four runs in the first behind 2-run hits from
Dylan Heyduk and
Griffin Shenman. Moravian pulled two runs back in the top of the second, but were unable to erase the River Hawks' lead that they never relinquished from that point.
Martin was strong on the mound, allowing just six hits in six innings of work, walking just one batter before he was relieved by
Brice Gregory, who closed the door in the final three innings for his team-best third save of the year.
The River Hawks added a run in the fourth inning courtesy of an RBI single from
Michael Biuso, who plated Shenman in the process.
There was a big day for
Sean McCulloch as well, as he collected three hits as well as a 22nd stolen base of the season, a stolen base that brings him a share of the all-time Landmark Conference stolen base record for a career, with his 89th coming in the eighth inning when he swiped second base.
The River Hawks also tacked on two more insurance runs in the eighth that would prove decisive, McCulloch bringing home pinch-hitter
Kris Morrow, marking his return from injury with a base hit into center field, before the center fielder scored himself on a sacrifice fly by
Tony Rossi.
Moravian got two runs back in the ninth via a Chris Pow home run, but it proved too little too late with Gregory closing the door on the Greyhounds with a strikeout to end the game. Gregory's final line included two punchouts across his three innings of work, while only allowing two hits for two saves in as many appearances.
The River Hawks will aim to continue the series successfully on Sunday, squaring off twice with the Greyhounds to cap a three-game weekend set. Denny Bowers's team pick up their tenth win of the season and move to 6-5 in the Landmark Conference as they look to wrap up the series with games at 12 and 3 PM on Sunday.
