Strong First Period Leads to Blowout Win at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, PA (April 6, 2024) - The Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team got back in the win column with a victory over the Lycoming College Warriors 19-4 Saturday afternoon. 

Susquehanna got on the board early with a Kelsey Homberg goal just over a minute into the game to take a 1-0 lead, and they never surrendered it the rest of the way. They scored another eight goals in the first period while outshooting Lycoming 14-5 with 12 shots on goal to take a huge 9-0 lead into the second.  

The offense slowed down in the second period with just two goals scored, one each from Emma Kelleher and Hanna McNamara, but the defense remained strong. The River Hawk defense held the Warriors to just three shots in the period as they took an 11-0 lead into halftime. 

Out of the half the River Hawks offense started clicking again. They scored five straight goals to start the third to give them a 16-0 lead with 5:09 to go in the period before Lycoming finally got on the board two minutes later to end the shutout, and that score held going into the fourth.  

In the fourth Susquehanna matched Lycoming with three goals each and continued to outshoot the Warriors 8-7, with six shots on goal for both sides. The final horn sounded the River Hawks completed their most lopsided win of the season thus far 19-4. 

On offense Susquehanna had contributions from all over as nine River Hawks totaled two or more points on the afternoon. Kelleher led the way with five points on four goals and one assist. Both Homberg and McNamara also managed a hat trick while Heather Riefenhauser tallied three assists. Liv Owen, Caitlin Harvey, Allie Kutler, Jessica Russo, and Waverly Oake-Libow all scored two points on the day as well. The River Hawks thoroughly outshot the Warriors 36-16, fielded more ground balls 21-14, and were perfect on clear attempts going 17-17.  

The win snaps a two-game losing streak for Susquehanna and brings them to an 8-4 record overall and 2-2 in the Landmark Conference. The River Hawks will stay on the road for their next game against the Juniata College Eagles on Wednesday April 10. The game will begin at 6 p.m.
