SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna's softball season met its end on Tuesday one game shy of a return to the Landmark Conference Tournament as they fell 3-0 to Lycoming in the conference play-in game. The host and fourth-seeded River Hawks welcomed the fifth-seeded Warriors back to Sassafras Field after splitting their doubleheader on Friday that earned each of them the last two playoff spots. Lycoming heads to Moravian University for this weekend's conference tournament, where they'll open with the top-seeded and host Greyhounds on Friday.
Amanda Amerman took to the circle for Susquehanna against Lyco's Avery Eisworth. Both did well through the first three innings, with the only run generated was a third-inning RBI single by the Warriors' Avery Eiswerth to lead 1-0. Despite four errors on the day for the River Hawks, none of them resulted in unearned runs, although they were held to one hit through the early going that came on a
Zoe Bork leadoff double in the second.
Lycoming made a bid to gain control of the game in the top of the fourth as they staged a two-out rally. After Amerman retired the first two batters, Kylie Russell was hit by a pitch and Claire Alexander singled to left, setting up Kylie Segraves to deliver a two-RBI double and a 3-0 lead.
Brianna Jones, who started the game at second base, came on in relief of Amerman and got the final out of the inning to keep it a three run game. Susquehanna almost had a rally of its own in the bottom half of the inning with the bases loaded and
Ashleigh Gerber stepping to the plate as a pinch hitter with two outs, but Eiswerth offered up her second and final strikeout of the game to get out of the jam. Entering the bottom of the fifth Eiswerth stepped out of the circle to switch places with right fielder Kylie Russell, who delivered three more innings of shutout ball to earn the save.
Susquehanna was held to five hits, with two coming from Bork in a 2-for-3 day for the senior. The next closest they came to a run was in the seventh when
Hannah Roland led off with a double to right center. After a
Nicole Plesh sacrifice bunt put Roland over at third, an attempt to swipe home was thwarted by the arm of second baseman Alex Eckerson to the plate.
Amerman struck out four batters in 3.2 innings, while Jones fanned three in her 3.1 innings of pitching. Both combined to strike out Rachel DeWolfe and Eiswerth three times, with the one remaining belonging to Russell. Senior
Nicole Wuertz,
Hannah Roland, and
Katelyn Dugery each accounted for Susquehanna's remaining three hits.
