CHESTERTOWN, MD – After a week off, Susquehanna University Field Hockey hit the road for a late-afternoon meeting Saturday at Washington College, using a pair of first-quarter goals to beat the Shorewomen 2-1.
First-year
Jada Thompson used her first career goal, assisted by
Hannah Garlin, to put the team ahead eight minutes in, followed by a late first-quarter score from
Taylor Rothermel, assisted by
Kiara Koeller. Washington's lone response didn't come until the fourth quarter when Kat Esposito hit the cage with 2:25 remaining. Sophomore goalie
Taytum Lombardi presided in goal for her first career appearance, fending off ten saves in the contest, far and away the most for any Susquehanna goalie this season.
Susquehanna's defense proved just as efficient, adding one defensive save, courtesy of
Lydia Hidlay, as they kept the Shorewomen at bay despite a 24-10 lead in shots, including 12-7 in shots on goal, with seven of those shots on goal from Esposito. Washington was also handed 14 penalty corners. Rothermel led the River Hawks with four shots and three on goal, while
Sophia Prata had three shots with two on goal. Thompson had the remaining two shots on goal, while
Emma Campitelli represented the team's remaining shot.
Head coach
Allison Fordyce moves one game closer to the 100 career-win milestone with 97, split between 78 wins as Susquehanna, eight at Notre Dame of Maryland and 11 at York (Pa.).
The River Hawks now move into Landmark Conference play next Saturday, Sept. 21 at home against Drew at 1 p.m.
