WILKES-BARRE, PA - Susquehanna field hockey head coach
Allison Fordyce reached the 100 career win mark at the helm of the River Hawks with a 5-1 win over Wilkes, a result stemming from a first-minute goal as the visiting River Hawks never looked back to go 2-0 to start their Landmark Conference season.
The deadlock was broken just 39 seconds in, when
Kari Schmidt converted from a penalty corner having been teed up by
Samara Campenni. The goal was from the first shot of the game.
It wasn't long until the River Hawks led 2-0, as after six minutes had elapsed,
Mady Quigley put in the second of the game and of her collegiate career, having been teed up by
Emma Campitelli. Campitelli had a pair of shots saved not quite a minute after she teed up Quigley, but both were denied by the Wilkes stopper.
It was 3-0 before the first quarter had even ended and before the Colonels could tally a shot.
Taylor Rothermel provided
Lexi Fumanti with the opportunity to make it three, and the senior duly dispatched the opportunity to turn two into three.
Wilkes were the next team to score, as they tallied four of their five shots on the afternoon in the second quarter and with the fourth, pulled a goal back through Shaelyn Donnelly. The River Hawks still outshot the Colonels in the quarter, however, seeing two defensive saves on shots from Quigley deny them a fourth goal.
Taytum Lombardi made both of her two saves on the day in the second period of play.
Swiftly in the third quarter, the River Hawks added a fourth goal with Campitelli turning provider to
Ashley Schreffler, who beat the goalkeeper for her second tally of the season.
With just under five minutes to play,
Lydia Hidlay joined in on the fun, converting a chance provided to her by Schmidt, as the two seniors combined on a goal for the third time this season.
The River Hawks improve to 5-2 on the season with the win, and remaining as one of three unbeaten teams in the Landmark Conference at 2-0. They have a short turnaround for their next game, as they take on nationally-ranked Lynchburg in the Connie Harnum Memorial Game on Sunday, September 29th.
