Women's Soccer Season Ends at Scranton in Landmark Semis

SCRANTON, PA – Susquehanna's  women's soccer season came to an end Wednesday night in the Landmark Semifinals at Scranton, with a late Royals goal spelling out a 1-nil defeat.

HOW IT WENT DOWN
  • The game suffered through several early delays. The preceding men's soccer Landmark Semifinals game between Scranton and Drew went to penalty kicks, prompting the women's game to start slightly after its anticipated 7 p.m. start. They played the first two-and-a-half minutes before a lightning delay caused an even further delay.
  • Both teams returned to the pitch just after 8 p.m. and the rest of the game unfolded.
  • Susquehanna's defense was on watch all evening as Scranton led 19-2 in shots and 7-0 in shots on goal. Goalie Katie Henchy, responsible for eight of the team's ten shutouts this season including Saturday's scoreless regulation and overtime at Elizabethtown, chalked up six saves to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
  • The Royals' work on the scoring end paid off in the 72nd minute as Lena Madjor sent a ball to the top left corner, assisted by Morgan Griffin.
  • The River Hawks tried mightily to gain ground for a scoring chance, but Scranton's front lines kept the ball down on its attacking end.
  • Scranton finished with a 5-2 lead in corner kicks. Royals goalie Makenzie Van Arsdale had a relatively brisk evening with zero saves recorded.

THAT'S A WRAP
  • The River Hawks finish their season with a 9-9-3 overall record and 4-3-2 in the Landmark this fall. They earned the fifth seed for the tournament and advanced to their first semifinals since 2022 after defeating fourth-seed Elizabethtown on Saturday in penalty kicks, 4-2.
  • Sophomore goalie Katie Henchy had a breakout campaign, earning Landmark Defensive Athlete of the Week once this season and finishing with eight solo shutouts as Susquehanna totaled ten shutouts on the season, which ranked second in the Landmark.
