Women's Hoops Hammer Down Ninth Win Against Union to Open Puerto Rico Clasico

BAYAMON, PR - Susquehanna women's basketball defeated Union in convincing fashion Thursday, bookending a 20-point first quarter and outscoring the Garnet Chargers in the fourth by a 16-7 margin for a 63-44 win at the Puerto Rico Clasico to move to 9-1 on the season. The River Hawks, who received votes in this week's D3hoops.com poll and have won all nine games this year by double digits, face another big test against Montclair State in a Friday matinee. 

How it Happened:
  • Union jumped out to the early 3-0 lead before the River Hawks could find any footing on the offensive end. 
  • Julia Roth began the scoring for SU, netting an easy lay up to get on the board.
  • Union kept the pressure on, making the next basket before the River Hawks went on a 11-0 run.
  • Susquehanna exploded late in the first quarter, jumping out to a commanding 11 point lead. 
  • SU led 20-12 after the first quarter break.
  • Susquehanna held at least a six point lead throughout the entirety of the second quarter of play, with their biggest lead of the frame jumping out to eight points.
  • The River Hawks led 32-24 at the half.
  • Early in the third quarter, Union cut the SU lead to four, before Julia Pinckert netted a free throw to maintain a five point lead.
  • The River Hawks held the lead throughout the quarter, jumping out to a comfortable 47-37 lead entering the final quarter of play.
  • A Julia Roth jumper pushed the SU lead to 14 points early in the fourth quarter, but Union did not go quietly.
  • Union continued to fight, but the River Hawks had the hot hand for the remainder of the afternoon, jumping out to as much as a 20 point lead late in the game.
  • Susquehanna held on to win 63-44, marking the team's fifth straight win in a row.
Inside the Box Score:
  • Julia Pinckert led the River Hawks in points scored, netting 12 points to go along with her eight rebounds.
  • Julia Roth continued to dazzle in her return season, setting yet another double double for SU. Roth finished the afternoon with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Zoie Maffei jumped out to double digit points scored, sinking 10 points for the River Hawks.

  • Susquehanna has one game remaining in Puerto Rico, scheduled for December 19. The River Hawks will be tested as the team takes on RV Montclair State University slated for an 11:00 AM ET / 12:00 PM AT start time.
