KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Susquehanna University Baseball's 2025 season came to full bloom on Friday down at the D3 Showcase against Washington & Lee. Pitcher
Jack Greco threw the first pitch of the River Hawks' season starting against the Generals, who plated five runs over the first two innings towards a 12-4 victory. The showcase is held at Atrium Health Park, home of the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers.
The game was tied 1-1 through one as designated hitter
Jack Cahill forced a bases-loaded walk after W&L's Andrew Thornton delivered an RBI single in the top half. The Generals marched on as in the next frame they scored four runs. The first belonged to Paul Ramseur on a two-RBI double to make it 3-1. A throwing error from catcher
CJ Orrego offered a stolen base for Nick Lagges at second, while scoring Ramseur. Thornton returned to add another RBI single to his 2-for-4 day with a pair of ribbies to make the score 5-1. Lagges added another run when his fourth-inning double drove home Campbell Charneco before
Owen Ayers got Susquehanna back on the board in the bottom half of the fifth with an RBI single to left to score second baseman
Griffin Shenman from third.
Susquehanna's hopes for a comeback were put on hold as in the top of the sixth with
Christian Rossi now on the mound, Charneco delivered a solo home run to left field to offer a 7-2 lead for W&L. The River Hawks got two back in the bottom half as
Tyler Hmielewski grounded out with runners on the corners, but successfully brought home
Sam Martucci. With Orrego on third later in the frame, he reached home on a wild pitch that walked
Joe Healy to make the score 7-4. That would be the last of the River Hawks' scoring as the Generals took five more runs, including four in the top of the ninth on two-RBI hits from Nathan DeWitte and Jonathan French.
Susquehanna totaled six hits on the day, including two from Orrego, with one apiece from Shenman, Ayers,
Tony Rossi, and
Michael Gagliardi. Shenman, Rossi, and Gagliardi's hits all were doubles. The River Hawks drew four walks as Martucci, Hmielewski,
Jack Cahill and
Dylan Heyduk offered up their baserunning services. Greco pitched the first five innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Biuso pitched the remaining four, giving up four earned runs as well off four hits with a pair of K's.
The River Hawks ride again in Saturday morning's portion of the D3 Baseball Showcase against Piedmont at 11 a.m. First-year pitcher
Zach Plank is slated to take the mound in his career debut.
