TOWSON, MD - Despite a strong start by host Goucher where they lead 15-4 at the outset, the Susquehanna men's basketball team moved swiftly throughout the rest of the first half to take control and lead 42-38 at halftime. This rang true even further in the second half as the River Hawks built their lead to as many as 21 points to secure a 90-82 Landmark win over the Gophers, further cementing their red-hot status winning seven of their last eight. The victory gives Susquehanna a season sweep over Goucher and holding a 12-8 overall mark with a 9-4 ledger in the Landmark.
Five River Hawks landed in double figures, led by center
Billy Anderson notching another big game with 21 points and ten rebounds, including knocking down one 3-pointer. He was joined in the double-digit scoring end by
Cooper Haberern and
Brandon Lavitt, each totaling 17 points as Haberern hit three threes and Lavitt posting 7-of-11 from the floor. Haberern added six rebounds, while
Audric Washington had seven boards on the night to go with 13 points off the bench, while
Michael Pirone managed 11 points after delivering two 3-pointers on the evening. These efforts countered the Gophers' top scorers in Darnell Morris and John Dixon, who had 27 points and 23 points, respectively, as well as the home team making a staggering 15 threes on 29 tries that kept them in the game.
Susquehanna handled the rebounding battle comfortably with a 39-27 advantage, including 13 offensive rebounds for 16 second-chance points. The 3-point work of Anderson, Haberern and Pirone accounted for the River Hawks' making 6-of-20 on threes, while finishing at 52.2 percent shooting (35-67) and 14-of-18 on free throws. The Gophers, meanwhile, made 50.0 percent (29-58) with 15-of-29 made from long range and 9-of-15 on free throws. The River Hawks also held a sizable lead in points in the paint, leading 44-24.
The Wednesday-night victory keeps Susquehanna in third place in the Landmark Conference standings, holding the tiebreaker over Wilkes, who also carry a 9-4 Landmark record after the River Hawks defeated the Colonels back in January. On Saturday the two will compete in earnest for the number-three spot as Susquehanna host Wilkes in a 4 p.m. tipoff as part of SU's Hall of Fame and Alumni Day.
