SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna University's women's basketball team shut down the Gophers of Goucher College Wednesday in Landmark Conference action by a 94-67 score. The matchup began with both teams exchanging baskets back and forth on each other, leaving the first quarter in a close knit battle as Susquehanna led by three, 21-18. Goucher kept it close in the second quarter taking a slight lead at 34-33, after which the River Hawks closed out the half of a 9-2 run en route to a big third quarter that set them up on the winning end of a lopsided second half.
Sydney Weyant led the team with points at the half with eight points. Carly George's seven points and eight rebounds helped to propel the River Hawks into a comfortable halftime lead, sitting at 42-36. Susquehanna came out of the half with the hot hand as they banked ten field goals in the quarter, seeing George's seven rebounds in the first half almost double in the third quarter. Selvaggi got the hot hand in the third quarter leading all River Hawks in scoring with eight points, followed by George's 5 rebounds. Susquehanna held a comfortable lead after the third over the Gophers, 67-55. The fourth quarter saw Susquehanna extend their lead to 27, which turned out to be the final margin of victory.
Peak performances from multiple River Hawks were showcased during the matchup. George set a career high in rebounds, grabbing 18 boards to go along with her 15 points. Goerge was not the only River Hawk to earn a double-double against the Gophers. Greta Servitto earned her first career double-double and set a career high in points and rebounds. The first year came off the bench scoring 16 points for the River Hawks, and rebounding 12. Three other River Hawks led star performances against the Gophers, as Lauren Klein matched her career highs in rebounds and points in a game, scoring 12 points and claiming seven rebounds. Weyant and Kenzie Selvaggi helped lead the River Hawks over the Gophers each scoring double digit points, Weyant scoring 17, while Selvaggi dropped 12 points. Susquehanna earned an astounding number of rebounds as a team in the Landmark Conference matchup, as they earned 74 rebounds, seeing 50 of the 74 coming from the defensive end of the court.
The win Wednesday keeps Susquehanna in fourth place in the conference standings, one game ahead of fifth-place Drew, who they will face in their regular-season finale after beating the Rangers, 75-64, in their first meeting on Jan. 8. The River Hawks continue to be the only team in the Landmark to remain undefeated against unranked conference opponents. They look to keep their good fortunes rolling as they host conference-foe Wilkes on Saturday at 2 p.m. as part of SU's Hall of Fame and Alumni Day. The River Hawks defeated the Colonels in Wilkes-Barre in their first meeting back on Jan. 18 by an 83-57 score.
