WESTMINSTER, MD- The Susquehanna women's lacrosse team's fourth-quarter efforts fell just short at McDaniel on Saturday. Trailing 8-4 after three quarters, the River Hawks fired off the only three goals of the fourth from Sophia Trively, Sophie Cole, and Abby Andrus. However, the final 7:22 did not produce the game-tying score despite their best efforts.
The River Hawks struck first in the matchup as Jessica Russo pushed the ball past The Green Terror net early in the matchup. McDaniel College would answer with two straight goals to wrap up the first frame. Susquehanna would strike first once again in the second quarter as Emma Kelleher earned an unassisted goal. McDaniel's offense would propel the tie game into a four goal lead, scoring four goals in a row. Emma Kelleher netted her second goal of the day to cut the lead back down to three, though McDaniel pushed the lead back to four by halftime leading 7-3.
Susquehanna's trend of starting the scoring in each period would overflow into the third quarter as Allie Kutler would add her name to the slew of River Hawks to score on the afternoon. McDaniel College would score their final goal of the day with 3:56 remaining in the third period. The River Hawks would find themselves down 8-4 entering the final frame. Trively kickstarted the River Hawk offense early in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 8-5 in favor of the home team. Shortly after Trively's goal Russo earned her first of two assists in the match, as Cole would cut the lead to two. Andrus would cut the lead to one following a pass from Russo. Goalie Aerin O'Brien again played superb defense to keep Susquehanna within reach of a potential equalizer, compiling 13 saves, including a pair of free-position shots from the Green Terror. McDaniel's keeper Caleigh Kohr was just as impressive, finishing with seven saves as both defenses held both teams off from scoring in the final seven-plus minutes of the game.
The orange and maroon's 1-3 start can be considered deceptive with the competition they stacked up against to start the year, including Dickinson and 25th-ranked Messiah earlier this week. They look over spring break to even their record prior to Landmark Conference play starting later in March. First they will duel with Lebanon Valley at home on Tuesday at 4 p.m., then a trip out to Pittsburgh where they will face Allegheny next Saturday, Mar. 8 at 1 p.m.
