River Hawks Fall in Series Finale Against Lycoming

SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna baseball was beaten 5-3 by the Lycoming Warriors in Sunday's afternoon contest in the finale of a three-game series in their home-opening weekend, but won the series after winning both games of the Saturday doubleheader.

Neither side got on the scoresheet in the first three innings, with Susquehanna starter Ben Gearhart allowing just one hit in the first three frames. Lycoming were first to score, however, with two runs in the top of the fourth and one more in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

The River Hawks got one run back in the bottom half of the sixth when Tony Rossi launched his fourth home run of the season, a solo blast to right center that hit the top of the wall on its way out of the yard.

Gearhart dealt a career-high six innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out a career high four Warriors. He was relieved by Max Lipton, who punched out one in 1.2 innings, while allowing an earned run in the top of the eighth. Jacob Klotz did not give up a run in the final 1.1 innings.

With the score at 5-1 in the bottom of the eighth frame, Jaden Buechler reached on an infield single to start the inning. Michael Gagliardi followed with a two-out knock, and Sam Martucci came through to bring the tying run to the plate with a two-run double down the right field line, but the River Hawks were unable to continue the rally, and Lycoming's closer did not allow a run in the final frame.

The River Hawks are now 11-7 after a series win over the Warriors, while they take two out of three for the second of two Landmark Conference series this season for a 4-2 league record. They are three games through a seven-game homestand that features a midweek conference clash against Juniata on Wednesday before reigning champions Scranton come to visit for a three-game weekend set starting on March 29th.
