Women Edge Out Lycoming, Even Landmark Record

SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna women's tennis made every match count Saturday in their Landmark match at Lycoming, proving five match wins was the magic number as the River Hawks took the doubles point with two victories, while adding three more in singles to outlast the Warriors, 4-3. Susquehanna improves to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in Landmark play.

The River Hawks won at one and three doubles to get the point, thanks to the top team of Mackenzie Romig and Alexa Wanamaker beating Rei Saar and Dillon Hutchinson, 6-2. At three the team of Katherine Yoder and Abigail Freeman defeated Cassandra Conner and Greta Kimble, 6-4. The singles matches proved to be more daunting as three of them went to three sets. Lycoming won two of these as Saar came back to beat Wanamaker at one singles, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-2, while at three singles Lyco's Sarah Lanphear overcame a 6-3 defeat in set one to SU's Yoder by winning the last two, 6-1 and 6-4. In the meanwhile, Susquehanna took the short road to win at two and four singles, as Romig defeated Sadie Stahl in two sets, 6-4 and 7-5, while at four first-year Kaiya Reisinger swiftly defeated Kimble, 6-1 and 6-2. Needing to win five and six singles to claim the match, the attention shifted to the three-set matchup at five between Maguire and Hutchinson. The Lyco netter took game on, 6-3, but Maguire rallied to take the next two games in decisive fashion, 6-2 and 6-0. In a winner-take-all at six, it proved to be no contest as Freeman shut out Cassandra Connor, 6-0 and 6-0, for the victory.

Susquehanna returns home for more Landmark fare Saturday, April 5, hosting Scranton with five more conference matchups to go.
