SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna baseball claimed a 5-3 win over Juniata on Wednesday behind a four-hit day for
Dylan Heyduk, the first such game of his career. He finished a double away from the cycle, with a triple and a game-winning two-run bomb in the seventh.
The River Hawks struck first in the bottom half of the first inning, when
Michael Gagliardi's fielder's choice allowed
Tyler Hmielewski to score from third base. Hmielewski would turn provider in the second, bringing home
CJ Orrego on another fielder's choice.
Juniata got one run in the fourth on an RBI walk against first-time starting pitcher
Tony Rossi, who earned his first career start on the mound while also batting in the second spot in the lineup. Rossi went 5.1 innings, a career-high, and recorded another career high with three punchouts, while allowing three earned.
Susquehanna made it 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, answering back after stranding the tying run on third in the top of the fourth after Rossi rolled a double play ball to second baseman
Lucas Zachesky. The run crossed in the form of Zachesky after he doubled and stole third, crossing in a close play at the plate on
Christian Biuso's third sacrifice fly of the season.
After both sides went down without scoring despite a Heyduk triple in the fifth, Juniata tied the game in the fifth on a two-run single by Ricky Scott.
Zach Plank came in from the bullpen to get the final two outs of the inning after Rossi was relieved.
Rossi, having remained in the lineup as the designated hitter, came back from the stretch with a single to left center, and that set the table for Heyduk to come through in a big spot, launching a missile over the right field wall for his second career home run, with the first also having come against the Eagles in 2023. From there, Plank recorded two more outs in the eighth before making way for
Jack Greco to slam the door on the Eagles for his first career save, recording four outs in his first relief appearance of 2025.
Heyduk's 4-for-4 day led the River Hawks, missing out on a fifth trip to try and complete a cycle, while Zachesky also managed three hits in four trips, including two doubles. Rossi and
Jaden Buechler also recorded hits, while the home side worked three walks and stole two bases.
The River Hawks move to 15-18 on the year, 8-10 in Landmark play, which leaves them just a game out of the postseason picture.Â
