Ball Bounces Juniata's Way in Midweek Landmark Action

SELINSGROVE, PA - The four-point efforts of Abby Andrus and Emma Kelleher Wednesday afternoon against Juniata was not enough to counter a series of Eagles two-goal stretches that resulted in a 13-9 win for the visitors in Landmark play. Juniata opened the game with a 2-0 lead and never relinquished control. Though the River Hawks fought in the early going to cut the lead down to one on two occasions, the Eagles used a four-goal second quarter to take a 6-3 lead at halftime, eventually building their lead to as many as six in the fourth quarter.

Andrus led Susquehanna with four goals on the day to work her career numbers fo 94 points and 85 goals. Two Eagles each had four-goal days also in Peyton Goodrich and Kyndall Yeager, while Kelliann Drummond also joined the four-point club with three goals and one assist. Kelleher had two goals and two assists for the River hawks, with Liv Owen, Sloane Coddington and Jessica Russo each contributing one goal. Owen, who reached 200 career points on Saturday against Lycoming, moved one goal closer to the century mark in career scores with 96. She now had 206 points lifetime.

Juniata took the opening draw control to the back to the net, carried out by Skylar Stevens just 44 seconds into the contest. The Eagles struck again when Yeager offered her first score nearly three minutes later. The River Hawks at least had the final say in the first quarter thanks to Andrus connecting for a score from Coddington to cut the lead to one. Susquehanna cut the lead down to one once more when Owen scored on an extra-person opportunity to make it 3-2 Juniata, only for the Eagles to respond with their second of five two-goal stretches that helped set some distance. Andrus opened the second half with a goal, though Juniata strung together two more goals to make it 8-4 in its favor. Kelleher had both her goals in the second half, with Russo contributing one of her own. Goodrich and Yeager went to work in the second half to bulk up their goal totals, though it was the work of Kelliann Drummond and Ella McGlaughlin that comprised Juniata's fifth and final two-goal stretch to give the Eagles their largest lead late in the contest at 13-7 with 4:51 remaining. Andrus added her last two goals in this final stretch with assists from Owen and Kelleher.

Goalie Aerin O'Brien had 13 saves with as many goals allowed, while Juniata keeper Mikayla Bodley had ten saves on 19 shots faced. The Eagles outshot the River Hawks 33-25 with a 21-15 lead in shots on goal. Susquehanna scored on two of its four free position shots, one from Owen and one from Coddington. O'Brien only let one free position shot get through on Juniata's five tries.

Susquehanna, now 5-8 overall and 2-3 in Landmark play, need to finish strong with four games to go to clinch a Landmark Tournament spot, beginning at Wilkes on Saturday at 1 p.m. and back home against Goucher on Wednesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. The River Hawks defeated both last season by decisive margins.
