SELINSGROVE, PA - As Susquehanna University and college athletics celebrates National Athletic Training Month this March, the SU Athletic Department is proud to share that Head Athletic Trainer Mike Keeney is set to receive the Lifetime Achievement in Athletic Training award from the National Football Foundation (NFF), Central Pa. Chapter. Keeney, who has served Susquehanna's sports medicine staff since 1995, will receive his award at the chapter's annual awards banquet on Sunday, Mar. 22.
Mike Keeney has served as Susquehanna University's Head Athletic Trainer since 1995, devoting over 30 years to the athletics department and the football program. A living legend, Keeney was inducted into the Susquehanna Football Ring of Honor in 2020 to coincide with his 25 years of service to the university. A Pennsylvania product, Keeney received his Bachelor's in Athletic Training in 1991 from West Chester University, along with a Master's of Education with a focus in Counseling from Shippensburg University in 1995. He worked at Holy Redeemer Sports Medicine from 1991-1993, then at Shippensburg from 1993-1995 before coming on board at Susquehanna. He has made enormous and incalculable contributions to SU Football and other sports teams by helping student-athletes overcome injuries and stay on the athletic fields. Keeney has stood vigil on the sidelines for over 300 football games, witnessing many milestones for Susquehanna Football, including the 2024 team's NCAA Final Four run, the farthest the program has gone since 1991, and most recently the River Hawks' run to the 2025 NCAA Quarterfinals.
Keeney oversees a staff of three athletic trainers: Kaiti Hager, Emily Bridy, and Garrett Becker, all of whom play a key role in the care of Susquehanna's varsity student-athletes. Every student-athlete at the school knows and has an outstanding relationship with Mike. He has made enormous and incalculable contributions to SU's Football and other sports teams by helping student athletes overcome injuries and stay on the athletic fields.
