WILLIAMSPORT, PA - Susquehanna baseball's away game against Lycoming College on Wednesday ended in high-scoring fashion with the Warriors taking a 18-4 win in seven innings. The River Hawks drop to 22-13 with a 13-7 Landmark Conference record, good for second in the conference and one game up on their upcoming weekend opponent Scranton.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
- The Warriors got things started early with a three run first inning followed by two run second inning to take an early 5-0 lead. The River Hawks responded in the top of the third inning when CJ Orrego hit a fly ball over the right field fence for a solo lead off home run.
- Just two batters later, Michael Gagliardi joined the party with a solo home run. His fifth home run of the season cut into the Lycoming 5-2. The promising spark from the bats in the top of the third didn't translate defensively however, as Lycoming went on to score 10 runs across the fourth and fifth inning.
- The Warriors' elite play offensively gave them the commanding 15-2 lead entering the sixth inning. The River Hawks cut into the towering Lycoming lead with another two run inning in the top of the sixth. Lucas Zachesky hit a RBI single, and followed by another RBI hit for Orrego to make the score 15-4.
- The Warriors came back in the bottom half of the inning with a three run inning to go up 18-4. The River Hawks weren't able to score any runs in the top of the seventh, triggering the 10-run after seven inning mercy rule and giving the Warriors the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Warriors dominated the box score, as the final score read 18 runs to Susquehanna's four, 17 hits to Susquehanna's eight, and the River Hawks committed the lone error in the game.
- Orrego and Zachesky both went 2-for-3 at the plate, with Orrego picking up two RBIs and a run. Gagliardi, Paul Daly, Michael Girardi and Dylan Heyduk each recorded a hit for the River Hawks.
UP NEXT FOR THE RIVER HAWKS
- The River Hawks look to right their course when they travel to Scranton, PA for a weekend series against Scranton University to close out the regular season.
- The series draws big implications for the playoffs, with one game separating both teams in second and third place. Susquehanna is 13-7 in the Landmark, while Scranton is 12-8.
