SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna rallied from an early deficit to defeat Waynesburg 2-1 Saturday night at Sassafras Field. The Yellow Jackets struck first in the 10th minute, but the River Hawks answered in the second half, scoring both their goals in the final 16 minutes to start the season 2-0.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
- Despite keeping the ball on their scoring end for much of the match, the River Hawks were faced with an early deficit as a misplayed ball in the back led to Waynesburg's Amanda Pepe scoring on a one-on-one chance in the tenth minute.
- Susquehanna was hampered even more with the goalkeeping work of Lex Greenlief. It didn't get any closer when Caroline Slunt delivered a point-blank shot to the bottom right corner, only for Greenlief to get enough of her leg on it to knock the ball out of harm's way in the 69th minute.
- The River Hawks' patience eventually served them well to tie it. About ten minutes later Liv Baczor fired a shot, which hit off the right post and back into play. It was eventually gathered by Kate Adelman who set another one up for Baczor and took advantage of the secon chance to tie the game in the 75th minute.
- The orange and maroon pressed on against a stunned Yellow Jackets team. It was well-founded as just over 12 minutes later, Amelia Kopp completed the comeback, scoring in the 87th minute off an assist from Ava Billmeyer to give Susquehanna the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The River Hawks dominated offensively, holding a 20-8 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
- Ella Briggs led Susquehanna with five shots, while Adelman added four and Billmeyer had three.
- Baczor and Kopp each finished with a goal, while Adelman and Billmeyer each recorded an assist.
- Katie Henchy made two saves in goal for the River Hawks, improving her record to 2-0.
