Social media is a powerful tool — use it wisely to amplify your voice, celebrate your successes, and promote positivity. It offers tremendous opportunities for connecting with others, sharing your story, and even building a platform for future endeavors, including Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. However, social media also carries risks, which require thoughtful and responsible use.
These guidelines are designed to help you stay safe online, represent Susquehanna University with integrity, and use social media as a tool for growth and success.
Representing Yourself and Susquehanna with Integrity
As a student-athlete, you are a role model both on and off the field. This responsibility extends to your online presence. Your posts, comments, and interactions shape how others perceive you, your team, and the university.
Avoid posting, sharing, liking, or commenting on content that could harm your reputation or that of the university. Specifically:
- Do not engage in harassment, bullying, or discriminatory behavior (e.g., content about race, gender, or other protected categories).
- Refrain from derogatory or defamatory language, and obscene or pornographic content.
- Do not bash or taunt individual opponents or opposing teams or their coaches.
- Avoid anything that violates team, athletic department, or university codes of conduct, or that describes or depicts alcohol, drugs, tobacco, weapons, betting, political messaging, illegal goods or services, or any unlawful acts.
- Protect confidential information such as team strategies, injuries, or private communications.
- Do not post pictures or videos of others without their permission.
If you make a mistake, take responsibility promptly. Acknowledge the error and address it with honesty and transparency. If you choose to edit or update a previous post, clearly indicate the changes to maintain trust and credibility.
Staying Safe Online
Your safety and privacy are top priorities. Social media can expose you to risks if not used cautiously. Keep these tips in mind:
- Control Your Privacy: Use platform privacy settings to limit visibility. Regularly review and update these settings.
- Guard Your Information: Never share personal details like your home address, contact information, financial data, or class schedule. This information can make you vulnerable to identity theft or harassment.
- Think Before You Post: If you wouldn't want your grandparents, coaches, or future employers to see it, don't post it. Private posts can easily become public through screenshots or resharing. Assume that nothing online is truly private.
Building a Positive Personal Brand
Your social media presence is an extension of who you are. Use it to share your story authentically and build a positive narrative. Focus on three key elements — CAP:
- Consistency: Maintain a unified tone and appearance across all platforms.
- Authenticity: Share your journey in a way that resonates with others and highlights your unique strengths.
- Positivity: Inspire and engage with your audience while steering clear of negative interactions or inflammatory discussions and debates.
Highlight your academic achievements, athletic milestones, community involvement, and personal passions to build a well-rounded and compelling personal brand.
Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) Opportunities
Social media opens doors to capitalize on your personal brand, but it comes with responsibilities. When pursuing NIL deals:
- Follow NCAA rules, Pennsylvania state laws, and Susquehanna University policies.
- Choose partnerships that align with your values and those of the university. Avoid collaborations with brands or organizations that could negatively impact your reputation or the institution's.
- Consult with the Athletics Compliance Office for approvals when referencing Susquehanna in sponsorships or promotions.
By balancing your brand with institutional policy (see NIL Policy), you can fully maximize your NIL opportunities.
Social Media for Career and Personal Growth
Your online presence can be a steppingstone to future success. Employers, graduate programs, and professional recruiters often review candidates' social media profiles. A professional and polished presence can leave a lasting, positive impression.
- Collaborate with Athletics to feature your content on university platforms, amplifying your reach and visibility.
- Use LinkedIn to network with professionals and showcase your skills and achievements. The Career Development Center can help optimize your profile.
Consequences of Guidelines Violations
Besides harming your individual brand and reputation, violating these guidelines can result in consequences ranging from team sanctions to suspension from athletic participation. However, our goal is education, not punishment. Any violations will be addressed with the intent of helping you learn, grow, and better navigate social media.
Support and Resources
If you have questions or need support, reach out to your coach, Athletics Communications, or Athletics Compliance. They're here to provide guidance and address concerns.
Additionally, if you ever feel overwhelmed by social media pressures, remember that Susquehanna's counseling and wellness resources are available to help. Your mental well-being is just as important as your success in the classroom and on the field.
By following these guidelines, you can protect yourself, build your brand, and represent Susquehanna University with integrity. Embrace the opportunities, stay true to yourself, and share your story with pride.
