James Callaghan began his stint as a member of the River Hawks men's and women's swimming & diving coaching staffs in 2019-20 season as he enters his fourth year in 2022-2023. Callaghan also serves as the aquatics director for the James W. Garrett Sports Complex Natatorium.

The Staten Island, N.Y., native was the head swim coach of the Great Kills Swim Club for three summers (2016-2019), mentoring over a 100 swimmers aged 4-18. He was also a swim instructor at the Staten Island Academy (Summers 2014-2015) and with the Ursinus College Little Bear Program.

Callaghan had a solid swimming career for the Ursinus Bears, claiming All-Centennial Conference First Team honors in the 200 butterfly in 2016 and three straight All-Centennial Second Team accolades in the 400 individual medley (IM) between 2016 and 2018. A team captain as a senior, he graduated as the Ursinus record holder in the 400 IM.

He is a member of the American Swimming Coaches Association and is certified as a lifeguard and in First Aid/CPR/AED.

He earned his B.S. in health & exercise physiology with concentration in coaching & education - Ursinus College (2019).
