Sharief Hashim was named the Director of Athletics at Susquehanna University on May 15, 2020, and began his duties on July 1. Hashim joined the River Hawks athletics department after serving in the same capacity for two years at SUNY Potsdam.
As director of athletics, he provides visionary leadership, supervision and management to support the academic and athletic success of students in concert with the university's mission and strategic priorities. Hashim is responsible for a department consisting of 23 varsity sports, over 70 professional coaches and staff, over 600 student athletes and a $3.1 million budget.
Hashim's tenure at Susquehanna began in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, guiding the athletic department through the proper protocols and safety measures to resume playing intercollegiate sports. The maneuver paid off that spring with men's outdoor track & field winning their first Landmark Conference championship since 2014. The following year in 2021-22 turned out to be a banner year as the River Hawks captured the Landmark Conference's Presidents Trophy after conference crowns in women's cross country, men's and women's indoor track & field, men's basketball, men's outdoor track & field, and softball. Along with the help of women's XC producing two national qualifiers and baseball reaching the Landmark Championship game, Susquehanna cracked the top 100 in the final LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Standings at 96th after respective fall and winter placements at 58th and 69th.
The 2022-23 season also produced six conference championships, two of which were unprecedented in football winning the Centennial Conference and women's outdoor track & field capturing Landmarks after winning the indoor title just three months prior. Men's track and field swept the indoor and outdoor Landmark titles for the second straight year, while baseball won their first Landmark title since 2019 in walkoff fashion. Additionally, women's cross country had one NCAA national qualifier, while softball reached the Landmark Championship game for the second straight year.Â
The 2023-24 year marked a significant moment in the Susquehanna Athletic Department as every varsity program was housed under one roof in the Landmark Conference when football moved in for the conference's first season sponsoring the sport. Football kept on its championship pace by winning the first two Landmark championships in 2023 and 2024 and two more NCAA appearances. The River Hawks reached the NCAA Final Four in 2024 after three national playoff wins, defeating Hobart, Saint John's and Bethel, marking their second NCAA Semifinals appearance and first since 1991. Field hockey also racked up consecutive Landmark titles in 2023 and 2024, both years finishing 15-6 and earning the one seed for the conference tournament. They also amassed the first unbeaten Landmark regular season slate in program history with a 9-0 league mark in 2024. Track and field added to the Landmark trophy case with another sweep of the men's and women's indoor titles in 2024, along with the men clinching the outdoor title again that spring. Men's basketball reached the Landmark championship game for the third time in four years
Hashim also collaborates with offices within the Division of Student Life and other key stakeholders, such as Academic Affairs, Finance and Administration, Enrollment Management, University Communications and Marketing, and University Advancement. His commitment to improving the athletics experience has been met with several facility enhancements, including renovations in the Jacobs Fitness Center, a new video board and turf at Doug Arthur Stadium, and live streaming capabilities that has thrusted Susquehanna University's athletics broadcasts into one of the best in the Landmark Conference.Â
Prior to his tenure at SUNY Potsdam, he served as director of athletics at Southern Vermont College, Bennington. Hashim was appointed the interim director of athletics at Southern Vermont in October 2016, before having the interim tag removed in July 2017. As AD, he oversaw internal and external compliance to college policies and NCAA rules and regulations. He also managed department staffing, budgets and NCAA grants. In addition, Hashim was a member of senior leadership and collaborated with other campus administrators on enrollment management and diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Prior to serving as AD, he held multiple roles at Southern Vermont. Hashim originally joined the staff as junior varsity men's basketball coach, athletics liaison and admissions counselor in April 2013. During the 2016-17 season, he also served as interim head women's basketball coach.
Before making the transition to college athletics, Hashim, a native of the Maryland-Washington, D.C., area, was the varsity boys basketball coach at Wheaton High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. While coaching, he also spent five years as a recreation specialist for the Montgomery County Recreation Department. Hashim briefly served as a park and recreation specialist for Fairfax County (Va.) government before leaving for Bennington.
He is a graduate of the 2016 NCAA Division III Institute for Administrative Advancement, a professional development program for administrators from under-represented populations in Division III athletics. Hashim is a member of several professional organizations, including the Business of Small College Athletics (BOSCA), the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) and the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA).
Hashim is also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., through which he remains committed to community service, mentorship, and advocacy.
