Jenni Sabbak and
Vivian Simone all scored a goal the River Hawks while
Veronica Green played stellar in net with 11 saves and the Susquehanna University Field Hockey team capitalized on a dominant first half to defeat Goucher College 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.
The River Hawks (7-7 Overall, 3-2 Landmark) controlled the game early on, taking six shots in the first eight minutes while the Gophers (6-7, 1-4) only managed one.
Goucher managed to get two shots on goal in the minutes that followed, but Green was able to make saves on both plays.
Pitman got the River Hawks on the board first in the 21
st minute.
The ball took several deflections in the box and found her stick. Pitman was able to turn the ball around towards the goal and fire a shot past the Gophers goalie and the team took a 1-0 lead.
The River Hawks scored less than four minutes later when
AJ Smith had a shot blocked and the ball landed in front of Simone in front of the net and she tucked away the finish.
The team took 19 shots in the first half compared to six by the Gophers.
Goucher recovered nicely from its slow start early in the second period and was able to cut the Susquehanna lead in half on a breakaway goal in the 46
th minute.
Just over two minutes later, Sabbak scored the final goal of the day to give the River Hawks some breathing room and cement the 3-1 victory.
Pitman and Sabbak combined for 14 shots in the win. Green made 11 saves while playing in all 70 minutes of action.
Susquehanna is now tied for third place in the Landmark Conference standings and the team won four of its last six games.
The River Hawks continue play Tuesday when they take on Cabrini at 7 p.m. in Radnor.
