Heather Casey had a goal and an assist,
Jenni Sabbak had a goal and
Stephanie Sachs added an assist, but the Susquehanna University Field Hockey team fell behind early and was unable to come back in a 3-2 loss to Scranton University Saturday afternoon in Scranton.
The Royals (12-3 Overall, 4-2 Landmark) were able to score the first goal of the game less than two minutes into the contest on a rebounded shot to take an early 1-0 lead.
The River Hawks (8-8, 3-3) could only muster two shots in the first 25 minutes of action and surrendered another goal in the 25
th minute as the Royals doubled the lead.
Susquehanna would then call a timeout and create positive momentum going into the half.
After several shots, the team finally put one into the back of the net when Casey scored off a feed from Sachs. The goal was Casey's third of the year, while Sachs picked up her first assist on the season.
Just before halftime, the Royals would score their third goal of the contest to extend the lead back to two goals, 3-1.
The River Hawks made a comeback bid, outplaying the Royals in the second half and narrowing the gap on a goal by
Jenni Sabbak in the 42
nd minute on an assist from Casey.
With ten minutes remaining,
Hunter Pitman fired a shot, but it was stopped on a diving save by Scranton. The teams went the final minutes of action and the River Hawks ultimately fell, 3-2.
Sabbak has quietly been a consistent force for Susquehanna and she has scored a goal in the team's last five games.
Veronica Green and
Emily DiGaetano combined for eight saves.
The River Hawks continue Landmark Conference play Saturday when the team takes on Drew at 1 p.m. in Selinsgrove.
