Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Falls Late to Scranton in Red Card Cancer Game

Eric Dempsey, Maxfield Reed, Alex Graul and Chris Neiman all registered three shots on goal and the team outshot the Royals 17-8 but the Susquehanna University Men's Soccer team surrendered a goal in the 80th minute in a 1-0 loss to Scranton University Saturday afternoon at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.

After an early shot by the Royals (5-8-2 Overall, 3-3 Landmark), the River Hawks (2-11-2, 1-4-1) were able to fire back five consecutive shots of their own and set the tone for a solid first half.

In those opening minutes, Reed, Naiman, and Dempsey all registered shots on goal but Royals goalkeeper was able to make stops on them all.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Ellingworth made an important save of his own in the 14th minute to keep momentum on the side of the River Hawks.

The remainder of the first half went by without any real goal scoring threats from either side, and the two teams ended the first 45 minutes of play scoreless.

Dempsey started the second half similarly to the first, with a shot on goal that was saved to keep the game tied.

Graul and Dempsey registered shots on goal a few moments later but the Royals were able to keep the ball out of the net once again.

Over the next 20 minutes of play, both teams pushed the ball down the field and created a few scoring chances in the process. The Royals were able to capitalize on one of those chances in the 80th minute and scored on goal off a finish from a corner kick.
Graul, Scott Misson, and Naiman all had shots in the closing minutes but the Royals were able to preserve a shutout and escape with the win.

Ellingworth made two saves in net for the River Hawks and Kyle Trainor added two shots.

Susquehanna honored seniors Maxfield Reed, Kieran Arrigan, Noah Carles, Eric Dempsey, and Kai Davies prior to the game. Both the River Hawks and the Royals wore "Red Card Cancer" shirts as donations were collected that will go directly to Red Card Cancer.

The River Hawks continue play Wednesday when the team takes on Misericordia at 7 p.m. in Selingrove.
