Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Picks up Saturday Sweep Over Wesleyan and Swarthmore

Hannah Lyons and Sydney Portale had ten kills apiece and Lindsey Pugh handed out 33 assists in a game one victory over Wesleyan for the Susquehanna University Volley ball team before Portale, Kody Dillon and Lyons shined with double digit kills in a game two victory against Swarthmore as the team completed a mini two game sweep Saturday afternoon at O.W. Houts Gymnasium in Selinsgrove.

The River Hawks defeated Wesleyan in three sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-23) and Swarthmore (21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23) in four sets.

In the first set of game one, the River Hawks (20-12) began on the wrong side of the scoreboard, trailing the Cardinals (14-3) on two separate occasions. Down 12-10, the team proceeded to score five straight points highlighted by a Portale kill and a Pugh service ace to flip momentum and give the River Hawks a lead they would not relinquish.  Lyons had five kills during the set leading the team, with Sydney Portale adding in four kills as the team won, 25-19.

In a back and forth second set, another small run by the River Hawks proved to be the difference, as the team scored four straight points to take a 15-11 lead. The Cardinals would close within one point on two separate occasions, but three straight points by Susquehanna sealed a 25-21 second set win.

In another back and forth affair, the River Hawks maintained the lead for a majority of the third set, but endured some adversity when the team surrendered its advantage and trailed 22-20. The team would go on to score four of the final points in the set, highlighted by kills from Portale, Pugh and Dillon and Susquehanna won the match in straight sets against a talented Wesleyan team.

In game two, the River Hawks dropped the first set to Swarthmore before winning the next three on the way to another win.

Following a disappointing first set in which the Garnet (13-8) scored the final four points, the River Hawks dominated the middle portion of the second set, scoring seven straight points to build a large advantage. Portale highlighted the run with three kills and the team won 25-19 to even the match at one set apiece.

Seeming to be a trend in both matches, the third set was similar to the second, with the River Hawks pulling away in the middle stages and scoring five straight points after the game was tied at 13. The Garnet would close within three, but the River Hawks prevailed 25-19.

Swarthmore would stay close with Susquehanna in the fourth set, as the teams went back and forth. With the match in the balance and the set tied at 23, the River Hawks relied on an attack error by the Garnet and one final kill from Dillon to cement the four set victory.

Kasey Bost reached the 1,000 career digs milestone late in the game against Swarthmore and the team took a timeout to recognize her efforts.

Lindsey Pugh also reached the 1,000 assists milestone in yesterday's match against Franklin and Marshall.

Following the wins, Head Coach Kuuipo Tom said "I am very proud of the way the team bounced back today and were able to beat two very good teams after the week we've had. We suffered two difficult losses and have had some injuries, but the way we responded really tells us how much heart this team has."

The River Hawks continue play on Wednesday when the team takes on Bloomsburg at 7 p.m. in Selinsgrove for Senior Day.
