Volleyball Takes Down Bloomsburg in Four Sets

Kody Dillon led the team with 17 kills, Riley O'Dowd added 10 kills and Lindsey Pugh handed out 47 assists as the Susquehanna University Volleyball team defeated Divison II Bloomsburg University in four sets at O.W. Houts Gymnasium Wednesday evening.

The River Hawks (21-12) outlasted the Huskies (5-18) 25-20, 25-18, 24-26, and 25-16.

The team dominated during the first set and despite a late comeback effort by the Huskies, were able to take the set 25-20. Dillon led the team with seven kills out of the gate.

The following set was a back and forth affair that featured seven lead changes. Leading 18-17, Susquehanna went on to score six straight points as O'Dowd started the charge with two consecutive kills.Pugh added a kill and the River Hawks completed a 25-18 victory to take a two sets to zero lead.

In the third set, Susquehanna jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but the Huskies rallied back with five straight points. Midway through the set, Bloomsburg was able to take seven of eight points propelling them to a 16-14 lead. An attack error by the Huskies trimmed the deficit by one and Janai Henderson had two straight kills breaking the tie to give Susquehanna the lead. Bloomsburg played aggressively throughout the set causing three different ties at 22, 23, and 24. In the end, the Huskies took three straight points to give them a 26-24 third set victory.

Susquehanna rebounded strongly in the final set with Megan Nelson's two straight service aces sparking an early run as the team scored six straight points. The River Hawks did not trail at all during the fourth set and during another run, Lyons, O'Dowd and Dillon all registered kills to extend the lead to 14-5. The team went on to take the fourth set 25-16 as Henderson registered the final kill.

Lizzie Herestofa and Kasey Bost had stellar defensive efforts, contributing 22 and 20 digs respectively.

As it was the final regular season home game, the team honored Henderson prior to the game in a Senior Day ceremony.

Following the win, Head Coach Kuuipo Tom said "I'd like to thank Bloomsburg for coming to Selinsgrove and playing our team as a Division II school in its inaugural season. I wish them the best of luck going forward."

The River Hawks look to continue their success Saturday when they go on the road to Bethlehem (Moravian College) as they take on Goucher and Elizabethtown at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
