Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Downs Catholic, Reaches Landmark Conference Final

Anna Werner had a goal and an assist, Emily Sullivan added a goal and Alee Petit tallied an assist as the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team defeated Catholic Tuesday evening at Sassafras Field to advance to the Landmark Conference Finals.

The River Hawks (13-3-2) had an early scare in the 3rd minute of action, as a Catholic (10-5-3) Forward slipped behind the defense and nearly scored. Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Welliver had to make a quick reaction save to keep the Cardinals off the board.

Susquehanna settled down shortly after, creating scoring chances throughout the first half.

Marley Clendenin, Werner, Kate Cantrell and Samantha Chillis all registered shots in the period, but the team was unable to score in the opening 45 minutes of action.

The River Hawks picked up right where they left off in the second half, dominating ball possession and firing shots at the Cardinals.

In the 54th minute, Susquehanna earned a corner kick and Petit sent a floating ball into the box that found the outstretched foot of Werner. The ball rolled past the diving Cardinals goalkeeper and the River Hawks took a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, Werner was able to catch up to a ball that seemed like it was destined to roll over the end line and fired a cross that found an open Sullivan who volleyed the second goal of the game into the upper right corner of the net.

Leading 2-0, the defense and Welliver did the rest.

Welliver only registered four saves on the evening, but her presence was felt as she picked off several Cardinal crosses and long balls.

One final push by Catholic saw a deflected shot hit the outside of the post, but that was as close as they would get.

Werner led the team with five shots while Cantrell, Clendenin and Sullivan added two.

The River Hawks advance to the Landmark Conference Final with the win and will take on Scranton. Kickoff is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. in Scranton.
