Maxfield Reed scored the first goal of the game and the team played stellar defense over the course of the game but a late goal and a second goal in overtime resulted in a 2-1 defeat for the Susquehanna University Men's Soccer team against Landmark Conference opponent Catholic Saturday afternoon in Selinsgrove.
The first half began as a back and forth affair with neither team taking control until the closing minutes when the River Hawks (1-8-2 Overall, 0-2-1 Landmark) were able to find a rhythm and take control.
Reed capitalized on an opportunity for a goal in the 44
th minute on a rebound from a ball sent in by
Aly Kenawy as Susquehanna ended the first half with a 1-0 lead.
The second half saw a surge by the Cardinals (5-5, 2-1) who outshot the River Hawks 8-1. Susquehanna was almost able to come out with the win but the Cardinals put a shot in the back of the net with three minutes remaining.
The game was tied at one apiece at the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime where Catholic would score on a ball that was chipped over the head of goalkeeper
Kyle Speckhart.
Speckhart made five saves in net, including a save where he sprawled out to get his hands on a header on a potential game tying goal in the 55
th minute. Five different players registered a shot for Susquehanna.
The River Hawks continue play Tuesday when they take on the Bullets of Gettysburg College at 4 p.m. in Gettysburg.
