Erin McQuillen had 20 points including 14 points in the second half, Amanda Lemire added 17 points, and Nevin Hoenninger had nine points and four assists as the Susquehanna University Women's Basketball team used a strong second half to defeat Lycoming College Sunday afternoon in Williamsport.
The Warriors (3-2) scored the first seven points of the game before the River Hawks (3-1) came back and eventually took the lead before the end of the first quarter.
Lemire nailed a three-pointer at the 4:34 mark of the opening quarter to knot the game up at nine before the team took a 14-12 lead after the first ten minutes of action. Lemire scored the final eight points of the quarter for the River Hawks.
The second quarter saw Sadie Comfort hit a three-pointer and Lemire hit another jumper to start the period, but the Warriors slowly climbed back into the game and eventually took a 32-29 lead at halftime.
In a back-and forth third quarter, the River Hawks used buckets by Madi Welliver and Bailey Trell to tie the game at 34 and tied the game again at 41 when McQuillen hit a three-pointer a few minutes later.
Amalia Esposito then gave the River Hawks a 44-41 lead after hitting a three of her own.
Lycoming briefly took the lead shortly after, but a very important 5-0 run by Susquehanna closed out the quarter and the team held a 52-47 advantage going into the final period.
The game seemed destined to come down to the final seconds, but the River Hawks stretched their lead to double digits multiple times in the final ten minutes of play to come out victorious.
Back-to-back three pointers by Trell and Esposito widened the lead in the middle stages of the quarter while Hoenninger and McQuillen cemented the win with key late buckets and free throws.
Using depth to their advantage, the River Hawks had nine players score in the win. Welliver led Susquehanna with seven rebounds against her former team.
The River hawks continues its season Saturday when the team takes on Juniata to open up Landmark Conference play. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at O.W. Houts Gymnasium.
