Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Falls in Overtime to Misericordia

Seth Callahan scored a team high 26 points and Zach Knecht had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, but the Susquehanna University Men's Basketball team lost a tough overtime matchup with Misericordia by a score of 91-87 Wednesday evening at O.W. Houts Gymnasium in Selinsgrove.

The Cougars (4-1) were able to get off to a hot start, taking a 14-4 lead in the early going.

A three-pointer by Jaden Martin and a barrage of three-pointers by Matt LaCorte brought the River Hawks (2-3) to within four points of the lead at 23-19.

The remainder of the half saw the Cougars' lead fluctuate between eight and three points as Susquehanna caused a turnover and a Knecht layup brought the deficit to a manageable 38-35 at the half.

The momentum shifted in the second half, with veteran leaders Callahan and Tyler Hoagland leading the charge.

Trailing 43-39, Callahan went on a personal 9-0 run to give the team a 50-43 lead.

Following buckets by Hoagland and Dominic Dunn, Callahan nailed a three-pointer to give the River Hawks a ten-point lead at 55-45.

Over the middle stages of the second half, Knecht took over, taking his defender one-on-one and scoring several times on a series of post moves.

However, the Cougars remained in the game and closed the gap over the final minutes of play, nailing a key three-pointer with eight seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 77.

A full court push by Hoagland led to a missed contested layup and the game went to overtime.

After a Cougar three-pointer to start the overtime period, Knecht responded with a conventional three-point play of his own to tie the game up.

Two free throws by Bryce Butler gave the team the lead once more, but Misericordia scored on two straight possessions to take an 84-82 advantage.

The teams would go back-and-forth in the final minutes, but the River Hawks were never able to tie or take the lead.

Trailing 89-87, Susquehanna attempted to miss a free throw in the final seconds but a violation damaged its chances of getting an offensive rebound and the Cougars cemented the win at the free throw line.

Susquehanna held a slight rebounding advantage at 32-30 and hit eight three pointers in the game. Hoagland finished with 18 points and six assists. LaCorte was the fourth member of the team in double figures with 12 points.

The River Hawks open up Landmark Conference play Saturday when they take on Juniata at O.W. Houts Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
