Men’s Basketball Drops Back-and-Forth Affair with Neumann

Seth Callahan scored 15 points, tallied five rebounds and had three steals while Zach Knecht and Bryce Butler also scored in double figures as the River Hawks erased a seven-point second half deficit, but eventually fell to Neumann University 63-60 Saturday afternoon at the George C. Bollman Center in Reading.

How It Happened
  • Both teams were unable to get off to a hot start, as turnovers plagued the two sides. The River Hawks (6-4) took a 7-2 lead after a bucket by Knecht and consecutive baskets by Callahan.
  • Leadiing 9-4 after two Matt LaCorte free throws, Neumann (8-4) scored eight consecutive points to retake the lead.
  • The remainder of the half went back-and-forth, as Susquehanna took a 20-14 lead before Neumann closed out strong and carried a 26-23 lead into the locker room. The River Hawks forced 12 turnovers.
  • Neumann maintained a slight edge over the early stages of the second half, extending the lead to seven on two occasions.
  • Trailing 46-39, Butler hit a three-pointer followed by another three-pointer by Lukas Yurasits to trim the deficit to one. Three pointers by Callahan and Dan Frauenheim kept the River Hawks close before another Butler make from deep gave the team a 54-53 edge. Buckets by Yurasits and Frauenheim extended the lead to 58-53 before Neumann called a timeout.
  • The River Hawks would go cold for the rest of the game, scoring only two points  in the final five minutes of action. With the game tied at 58, Callahan made a layup to give Susquehanna a 60-58 edge, but Neumann clamped down on defense and scored the final five points of the game. The team had a chance to tie the game on a three-pointer in the final seconds, but it did not fall and Neumann escaped with a 63-60 victory.
