Amanda Lemire scored a season high 22 points and had four steals while
Erin McQuillen had 18 points, five rebounds and five assists, but the Susquehanna University Women's Basketball team fell behind early and could not complete a comeback, falling to Marywood University 65-63 at O.W. Houts Gymnasium in Selinsgrove.
The River Hawks (3-4) scored the first two baskets of the game, as Lemire and
Madi Welliver each made shots to give the team a 4-0 edge.
Marywood (3-5) would bounce back, going on an 11-4 run over the next three minutes of action to take an 11-8 lead.
Back-to-back three-pointers by
Nevin Hoenninger and a jumper by
Alanna Connolly gave the lead back to Susquehanna, but Marywood scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 19-16 lead after ten minutes of action.
The Pacers continued where they left off, scoring six straight points to open the second quarter before a Connolly jumper stopped the run.
The lead would grow to 31-20 before Lemire canned two three-pointers, but Marywood still led 36-26 at the half.
The third quarter saw the deficit fluctuate between eight and 15 points for the River Hawks, as Lemire scored six points in the period. An important three-point play by McQuillen trimmed the lead to 51-39 for Marywood heading into the final quarter.
A Pacer three-pointer extended the lead to 53-39 before the River Hawks began to chip away at the deficit.
Trailing 59-49, Lemire hit a three-pointer, McQuillen hit a jumper and
Sadie Comfort made a breakaway layup to give Susquehanna a good chance at making the comeback.
Trailing 63-59, McQuillen had another three-point play and Connolly sunk a free throw to tie the game with 22 seconds remaining.
Susquehanna got a defensive stop on the other end, but could not secure the rebound and Marywood's Aryah Aungst made a putback to regain the lead with just four seconds left.
Lemire had a look to tie the game at the end of regulation but it would not go down and Susquehanna fell, 65-63.
Behind Lemire and McQuillen, Hoenninger had eight points for the River Hawks.
Senior
Maddie Murray had eight rebounds in her final collegiate game, as she will graduate later this month. The team honored Murray at the start of the contest.
Susquehanna continues its non-conference slate Saturday December 15
th when the team travels to William Paterson for a 2 p.m. contest.
