Abigail Ransom and Christina Rudderow combined to win a thrilling No. 1 Doubles match with a 9-8 (8-3 tiebreaker) win over McDaniel College Wednesday as the Susquehanna University Women's Tennis team rebounded from a 9-0 loss to start the Spring Training trip to defeat the Green Terror 8-1.
The River Hawks opened the trip with a 9-0 loss to Northwestern (Minn.) University Tuesday and also fell by a 9-0 score to Georgetown Wedensday.
Against McDaniel, Susquehanna swept the doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead. Along with the Ransom/Rudderow win at No. 1, the River Hawks saw wins by Eliza Griffin and Amy Jennings with an 8-3 win at No. 2 and the team of Kallie Honstein and Laura Long won an 8-0 victory at No. 3.
Susquehanna nearly swept the singles play as well winning each of the No. 2 through No. 6 matches for the final score.
Linsey Sipple won a 6-3, 7-5 decision at No. 2 and Griffin scored a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3. Cassey Fox won a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 4 while Rudderow was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 5 and Julia Spear also posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Jennings had the closest match in the Northwestern loss as she won the first set 6-1 before falling 6-0 in the second and then dropped a 10-3 tie-breaker at No. 6 singles.
The River Hawks will compete next against Goucher College at 1 p.m. March 31 at the Garrett Center Courts in Selinsgrove.
