Simone Scores in Overtime for Field Hockey Win

Vivian Simone scored on the corner of the cage with a pass from Hunter Pitman with no time left in the first overtime period to give the Susquehanna University Field Hockey team a 4-3 victory over York College Wednesday afternoon on Kinsey Field in York.

Pitman scored the game-tying goal with 28 second left in regulation as she took a pass from Hayley Adams and fired a shot into the corner of the goal to make it a 3-3 game and force the overtime period.

In overtime, Susquehanna (2-3) controlled the majority of the play and had some solid scoring chances including a shot by Pitman that hit the post ad a second opportunity with a one-on-one with the goalie who had come out of the cage to make the defensive effort.

With less than a minute to play in the first 10-minute overtime period, the River Hawks were awarded a penalty corner and even though time expired in the period, Susquehanna was able to play out the corner.

The initial pass off the corner came to AJ Smith who sent the ball to the right side of the arc to Pitman who sent a long pass across the offensive zone to Simone who was on the far post and easily redirected the ball into the back of the cage for the game winner.

The win snapped a three-game skid for the River Hawks.

Stephanie Sachs scored the first goal of the game with an assist from Gabby Martin at the 17:489 mark to give Susquehanna the early lead.

York 1-3) answered late in the first half to tie the score but Pitman scored with less than two minutes left before halftime with a second assist from Martin to give the River Hawks a 2-1 edge at the break.

In the second half, York tied the game again at 46:32 and then took a 3-2 lead six minutes later.

The River Hawks battled back and had a solid defensive stand in the closing minutes of regulation play as Hope Woolway made a huge defensive save on a York shot before blasting the ball forward and setting up Pitman's tying goal with less than 30 seconds to play.

Pitman finished with two goals and Martin added two assists while Veronica Green made five saves in the Susquehanna goal.

Susquehanna returns to action Saturday at Ithaca College as the teams play in the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer awareness game. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start.
