Julia Hutsko put the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team on the scoresheet in the 20th minute on a feed from Emily Sullivan and Kate Cantrell was able to pad the lead late on a pass from Erin Wilson and the River Hawks were able to record a 2-0 shutout of King's College Wednesday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre.
For a majority of the game, the two sides split possession pretty evenly, but the River Hawks (3-1-1) capitalized on their goal scoring opportunities in a contest that featured only eight shots combined from each side.
Hutsko was able to capitalize on one of those opportunities after Sullivan sent her a creative through ball that wove its way between two defenders. Finding herself alone on the top right corner of the box, Hutsko was able to chip the ball past the charging keeper and give the River Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Monarchs (2-2) were able to hold the River Hawks in check for the remainder of the half and give themselves a shot at a comeback over the last 45 minutes of action.
Susquehanna kept up the pressure to start the second half, scoring early on and having its defense hold the Monarchs in check for the remainder of the contest.
On a defensive clearance, Wilson sent a long ball down the left side of the field that bounded over two Monarch defenders and Cantrell was able to run on to it and sneak another chip shot over the keeper and bounce into the upper right corner of the goal.
Susquehanna outshot King's 5-3. The defense continues to be stellar, having only allowed three goals in five games. Alee Pettit and Wilson along with keeper Madison Welliver, who finished with two saves, continue to lead the back line in keeping opponents off the board.
The River Hawks look to continue their solid play when they take on Westminster College at 1 p.m. Saturday in New Wilmington.
